Our institution/school is connected to eduroam

The eduroam federation is an international project dealing with the promotion of mobility and roaming in national research and education networks (NREN). In the Czech Republic, this project is covered by the CESNET association. Our school/institution joined the project in 2021. Thus, another step was taken to increase the quality of study and the prestige of the institution.

Just one account. Anywhere.

A registered user can use this wireless network (wherever it is available) using just one user account.  Account management is performed by the home (establishing) organization.

Using roaming is simple. A properly configured user’s device is connected automatically as soon as the eduroam network is available. It’s similar to connecting to foreign networks of mobile operators within roaming. Hence the acronym: education roaming. The service is free of charge for all participants.

Activation of the eduroam account

In eduroam, the username consisting of two parts – the username itself and realm – is used. After the username you are used to from other school/institution systems, you will add the @ sign and realm realm.cz when roaming. Before use roaming for the first time, you will also need to set an eduroam password.

Setting up user devices for connecting to eduroam

In order to securely connect to eduroam, you will also need, apart from entering your name and password, to set up a certificate check.  The easiest way to do it is using eduroam CAT, see the documentation on the eduroam.cz.

For manual setup, you will need the following information:

  • network name (SSID): eduroam
  • connection protocol: 802.1x
  • security and encryption: WPA2/AES
  • authentication: PEAP (alternatively TTLS)
  • internal authentication protocol: MS-CHAPv2
  • RADIUS server name: radius.realm.cz
  • certification authority: Which certificate to use?
  • the IP address is assigned automatically via DHCP

Area covered

Eduroam is available in all classrooms. Completely covered is the whole (100%) school area.

Usage filtering

The use of eduroam by school pupils is filtered in accordance with the laws of the Czech Republic. Visitors‘ usage is not interfered in any way except for filtering outgoing SMTP traffic (TCP/25).  Use SMTPS (TCP/465) or Submision (TCP/587) services to send mail.

Support

Users in our school/institution can seek support either by email eduroam@realm.cz or by phoning the following number +420 123 456 789.

Visitors with an eduroam account should look for support primarily in their home institution, i.e. the one that provided them with the account.
